As part of its continuing commitment to strengthen the livestock sector and improve the livelihood of local farmers, the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) of Prosperidad, under the leadership of Municipal Mayor Frederick P. Mellana, successfully distributed 60 free-range chickens, amounting to more than Php 27,000.00, to members of the San Jose Rural Improvement Club (RIC) through the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO).
A total of 12 farmer-beneficiaries received assistance during the distribution, with each recipient obtaining five (5) free-range chickens. The initiative forms part of the municipality’s Free-Range Chicken Dispersal Program, which aims to enhance backyard poultry production, promote food security, and provide additional income opportunities for farming households.
The dispersal program also seeks to introduce new and improved bloodlines of free-range chickens to local communities. By providing quality breeding stocks, the program helps improve the genetic potential of backyard poultry, resulting in healthier flocks, better growth performance, increased productivity, and higher resistance to common diseases. These improved bloodlines are expected to contribute to the long-term sustainability and profitability of poultry production among beneficiaries.
During the activity, Municipal Agriculture Office Livestock and Poultry Coordinator Rocelyn Dingal, together with other MAO personnel, encouraged the farmer-beneficiaries to properly manage and care for their free-range chickens by providing adequate housing, balanced nutrition, clean water, and regular health monitoring. The recipients were also reminded of the importance of observing strict biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of diseases, safeguard the health of their poultry, and ensure sustainable and productive backyard poultry production.
The Municipal Agriculture Office also emphasized that the assistance is not only intended to support the immediate needs of the recipients but also to encourage them to multiply their stocks through responsible breeding and proper management. As the chickens reproduce, beneficiaries are expected to expand their backyard poultry enterprises, creating a sustainable source of food and supplemental income for their families.
The Free-Range Chicken Dispersal Program reflects the local government’s continuing efforts to empower rural communities by promoting diversified agricultural enterprises. Backyard poultry production remains one of the most practical and accessible livelihood options for smallholder farmers, requiring relatively low investment while providing regular sources of meat, eggs, and additional household income.
The Municipal Local Government of Prosperidad, through the Municipal Agriculture Office, remains steadfast in implementing programs and services that uplift the lives of farmers and strengthen the municipality’s agricultural sector. Through initiatives such as this, the local government continues to invest in sustainable agricultural development while fostering resilient and self-reliant farming communities.
